FAQ

Short answers for people comparing a consultancy with Microsoft Learn, a job advert, or a 40-product partner page. Product definitions belong to Microsoft; we link to Learn rather than rewriting it.

The product

What is Microsoft Purview?

Microsoft Purview is Microsoft’s data security, governance and compliance product family for Microsoft 365 and beyond: data loss prevention, information protection and sensitivity labels, insider risk, data catalog and Data Map, eDiscovery, records management and compliance management, in one portal. Microsoft Learn carries the formal product definition; our work is making those controls match your organisation’s written policies.

What is Microsoft Purview used for?

Organisations use it to find, classify, protect and govern their data: stopping sensitive information leaving (DLP), labelling and encrypting documents, detecting risky user activity, cataloguing the data estate, retaining or deleting records on schedule, and running eDiscovery for legal requests. Which parts you need depends on your obligations — that scoping is what our discovery workshop does.

How do you access Microsoft Purview?

Through the Microsoft Purview portal at purview.microsoft.com, with the appropriate Microsoft 365 licences and admin roles. During an engagement we work inside your tenant with agreed roles, and hand over documentation so your own team can operate it afterwards.

The practice

What does a Microsoft Purview consultant actually do?

A Purview consultant designs, tests and hands over working controls — DLP policies, sensitivity labels, Unified Catalog structures, Insider Risk policies — against your real data movements and UK accountability duties. Ghani Governance is an implementation practice, not a job board and not a Microsoft product page.

Are you hiring Microsoft Purview consultants?

No. Search results for “microsoft purview consultant” mix jobs with consultancies. This site is for organisations that need implementation help. We are not advertising roles.

Do you only implement DLP?

DLP is the first cell. The live offer also covers sensitivity labels and Information Protection, Unified Catalog and Data Map, Insider Risk Management, data lifecycle and records management, eDiscovery, Compliance Manager, Communication Compliance, and DSPM for AI. We scope what you actually need in a discovery workshop — not every workstream by default.

Can you improve an existing Purview estate that is too noisy?

Yes. Many organisations already have template policies. We review matches, exceptions, user impact and ownership, then tune before adding more enforcement.

Do you work outside Manchester?

Yes. The practice is UK-wide. Manchester and Greater Manchester are the first focus, as a service area — not because we have a staffed office there.

Are you a Microsoft reseller or partner page?

Ghani Governance is an independent consultancy. We work with the Microsoft Purview product you already license. We do not sell Microsoft licences from this site and we do not display partner badges we have not evidenced here.

Does Microsoft Purview still exist?

Yes. Microsoft Purview is Microsoft’s current data security, compliance and governance product family. Feature names move; the implementation problem — making controls match real work — does not. See Microsoft Learn for product definitions.

How much does Microsoft Purview cost?

Product licensing is Microsoft’s, not ours. We charge for discovery, design, implementation and handover time. Indicative planning ranges sit on the service pages; they are not quotes.

Will I only work with one consultant?

You engage the practice, not a one-person bottleneck. A principal consultant typically leads discovery. Delivery is then staffed with associate Microsoft Purview specialists and, where it serves the work, a trusted referral. You will know who is on the engagement.

Who is behind Ghani Governance?

Ghani Governance is a UK Microsoft Purview implementation practice. The offer is Purview. Group DPO and privacy-counsel judgement is demonstrated in that work — written policy first — not as a previous chapter. Hands-on Purview delivery includes Avanade, IBM, Zurich and JP Morgan. This site is the practice, not a personal brand page.

Do you only configure Microsoft Purview?

No. We start from written policy. If you already have data, classification, privacy, AUP, ROPA, AI, incident or cloud policies, we read them and design the Purview posture to match. If you do not, we draft them. The build in the tenant comes after that design report.

DLP

Is Microsoft Purview a DLP solution?

Microsoft Purview includes Data Loss Prevention as one capability among others (information protection, insider risk, catalog, compliance). It can enforce DLP across supported Microsoft 365 locations and endpoints. Whether it is the right DLP for you depends on the channels you must cover. Microsoft’s own overview is the product definition we use.

Will DLP block normal business activity?

It can, if you enable block mode on untested conditions. We normally start in audit or with a limited population, read the matches, and only then raise enforcement.

Can you improve an existing DLP setup?

Yes. A noisy estate is a common starting point: overlapping sensitive information types, no owners, and users who click through every tip. The first job is to see what the policies actually match.

What does DLP stand for in Purview?

Data Loss Prevention. In Purview it is the policy engine that detects sensitive information and can warn, audit or restrict how that information is shared or moved.
